Coat of German Shepherd - 04/22/2006
I have a male German Shepherd about 5 months old and his coat worries me. He has a long wooly undercoat that is red/brown and an outercoat that is black, but his saddle area is black tipped with red. He also has an outercoat of tan/cream near the chest, armpits and legs. Right now his undercoat is more predominent than his outercoats. In looking throgh his undercoat I can see thousands of black hair folicles. Since I got him I have noticed more black in his body and tail.

Is it uncommon for the outercoat to take a while in coming out? Is there something I can do or is this just a waiting game?

In addition how would you classify my puppy i.e. longhaired red/black sable or something else?

Hello there,
My shepherd kept a lot of her black until she was 9 months old or so. The shepherd grows and coat changes up until 1 year old and then for the next year they fill out. Hope this helps!
